The Junior was basically a whole new guitar, but since they still had a license to use Les Paul's name, they slapped his name on them. Rock became the thing, though, and budding rockers couldn't afford the Les Paul, plus they're so damn heavy and uncomfortable, so Strats were king. ![]() The Les Paul was originally (early 1950's) intended to be a guitar for serious players and priced accordingly. I think they made it cheaper, too, since part of the reason the 58-60's didn't sell very well was that they were so expensive compared to Strats. So they redesigned it for 1961, to compete with the Stratocaster, which was what everybody was buying.
